Work backwards from installation

The best survey scope begins with the decisions that follow. Route engineers, environmental teams, cable or pipeline designers, installation contractors and operations teams need different evidence, resolutions and confidence levels. Those needs should be reconciled before acquisition starts.

This approach prevents a familiar problem: a technically complete dataset that leaves critical constructability questions unanswered and forces supplementary work later in the programme.

Join geophysical, geotechnical and environmental evidence

Geophysical data defines seabed features, shallow geology and potential hazards. Geotechnical investigation develops the ground model needed for burial, stability, foundations and installation tools. Environmental evidence informs consent requirements and practical constraints on offshore activity.

These disciplines should be interpreted as one route evidence set. Contradictions, data gaps and limitations need explicit ownership so they do not disappear between separate reports.

Treat UXO as a programme interface

UXO risk can affect route selection, investigation strategy, environmental assessment, licensing, vessel sequence and installation readiness. It should therefore sit within the programme’s evidence and decision structure rather than operate as an isolated specialist package.

Qualified specialists must retain responsibility for investigation, risk assessment and clearance activity. The integration task is to make sure their evidence, acceptance criteria, permits and residual-risk decisions align with the construction corridor and the marine programme that follows.

Convert findings into a buildable route

Data becomes delivery-ready when findings are converted into route decisions, engineering inputs, exclusion zones, enabling works and clear procurement assumptions. Each open item should have an owner, evidence requirement and decision date linked to the offshore schedule.

The route readiness position should also show which assumptions affect vessel selection, tooling, cable or pipeline handling, weather limits and installation productivity. That visibility allows commercial and technical teams to price the same scope.

Use an evidence-led readiness gate

Before high-value assets mobilise, the programme should confirm that the corridor, permits, UXO position, access, data, interfaces and acceptance criteria support the intended method. A readiness gate is not another report; it is an accountable decision based on the evidence assembled across packages.
